Validated ID and SEIDOR have launched a Decentralized Identity project in collaboration with five universities in Catalonia

Validated ID is working on a new Decentralized Identity initiative funded by Next Generation in collaboration with SEIDOR Opentrends, the Rovira i Virgili University, the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, and the University of Girona to manage in a decentralized manner university credentials, including issuance, management, and verification. The main goal is to make it easier for universities to exchange information while allowing students to control their data using a “digital wallet" linked to a recognized identity.

Furthermore, the initiative has also received backing from two additional universities: The University of Lleida (UdL) and The Open University of Catalonia (UOC). These institutions will serve as observers, along with the Consortium of University Services of Catalonia (CSUC).

Agile and effective data exchange

This launch coincided with the increasing popularity of EBSI and the European Union’s eiDAS system for electronic identities, where Validated ID has been working on for the past few years. Hence, Public universities became keenly interested in moving towards fully decentralized environments.

SEIDOR partners with Validated ID to launch CAMINS

Recently, SEIDOR partnered with Validated ID to work together on a blockchain-based project known as CAMINS. The purpose of CAMINS is to establish a standard framework for exchanging student data digitally in a more efficient, flexible way based on the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI).

The project will be deployed with Validated ID’s VIDchain technology, which will verify credentials across all European Union countries, making them accessible to participating universities for validation. This platform will streamline documentation processes within universities and allow for decentralized data usage, specifically for micro-credentials earned by students.

With VIDwallet, students will regain control of their identity; with VIDconnect, identity protocols will be implemented to connect students with other users and services within the university ecosystem; while with VIDcredentials, verifiable credentials will be issued and managed anytime and anywhere.

This strategic initiative encourages students and university personnel to manage their credentials through a “digital wallet." Moreover, this project offers universities scalable and interoperable services for their entire systems.

These models can also serve as a reference framework for other purposes and evolve from the current service provided by the NISUE (Interoperability Node of the Spanish University System).
